Lake Baikal - is a lake in Eastern Siberia, the maximum depth is more than 1600 metres, the length of Lake Baikal is 636 km, the width is from 25 to 80 km. There is the Olkhon island near the northwest shore of lake Baikal. Olkhon is the heart of ancient stories and historical legendaries.
Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region was established in 1925. Total area is 22 800 km2. The District was performed as a municipal unit after adoption of the Charter of the municipal unit “Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region” from November 19, 1999.
The district centre, Zhigalovo Settlement, is located 400 km on the north-east from Irkutsk, the regional centre, and on the left shore of the Lena River. There are 40 settlements located 5 -110 km from the regional centre. The Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region borders on 5 district of Irkutsk Region: the Kachugsky District, the Ust-Kutsky District, the Kazachinsko-Lensky District, the Ust-Udinsky District and the Osinsky District. You can get to these districts and the regional centre by automobile. There are the following enterprises which are important for stabilization socioeconomic situation in the Zhigalovsky District: branches of Federal State Institution “Lenskoe GBU VP & S and Zhigalovsky ship-building yard” and OGUP DSIO, “Zhigalovsky wood division”, Ust-Uda seismic prospecting crew, RUSIA Petroleum Joint Stock Co., oil and gas drilling companies.
Nature of Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region
The highest point of the Zhigalovsky District is 1502 m. Asle above sea level equal to 850-950 m prevails.
The Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region has rich natural resources. One of the most significant resources on a national scale is gas. The Kovyktinskoe deposit is very perspective. The development of this deposit can meet the regional energy, chemistry and petrochemistry, communal service needs and allow to export gas to other regions.
Rare earth elements such as brome, lithium and others were discovered in the Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region. The climate of the Zhigalovsky District is strongly continental, winter is long and cold, summer is hot and wet. Average annual temperature is negative, down to -5C. Average temperature of the coldest month, January, is -29C (sometimes -50C), average temperature of the warmest month, July, is +18C (sometimes +35 or +40C).
Snow-cover height in the middle of February is 30-40 centimeters. The main water artery of the Zhigalovsky District is the Lena River. Its biggest tributaries are the Tutura, Ilga, Orlinga Rivers.
The Zhigalovsky District leads in amount of forests of Irkutsk Region. Coniferous forests generally predominate. There are a lot of pine and larch trees, less of Siberian pine, fir and spruce trees. Taiga is rich of pine nuts, berries and mushrooms.
The Zhigalovsky District is not rich of crop areas because of taiga and bald mountains. From crops wheat is cultivated. Truck crops such as potato, cabbage, carrot, beatroot, tomatoes and cucumbers (in greenhouses) are cultivated well. Fauna of the Zhigalovsky District is also rich and various. There are a lot of elks, roe deers, musk deers, sables, squirrels, hazel grouses and wood grouses in taiga. There are also otters, muskrats and minks in water reservoirs of the district. Grayling and goldilocks among a big variety of fish are of primary importance.
Nowadays because of remoteness from big industrial cities and Irkutsk (400 km) the Zhigalovsky District is not polluted by industrial wastes.
In the Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region a lot of holidays such as the Day of the District, festival “Zhigalovsky folk music”, the Days of Russian culture and spirituality “Glory of Russia”, the district fair “Zhigalovsk autumn”, exhibitions of folk art and anniversaries of settlements and enterprises are traditionally held.
There are a lot of tourist agencies which arrange sports and hunting tours such as Siberian stag-hunting and bear-hunting in the den for Russian and foreign tourists in the Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region.
