Lake Baikal - is a lake in Eastern Siberia, the maximum depth is more than 1600 metres, the length of Lake Baikal is 636 km, the width is from 25 to 80 km. There is the Olkhon island near the northwest shore of lake Baikal. Olkhon is the heart of ancient stories and historical legendaries.
Geographical Setting of Bodaybinsky District of Irkutsk Region
The Bodaybinsky District of Irkutsk Region is located on the Vitim–Patom Highland in the north-eastern part of Irkutsk Region. The District borders on Yakutia in the north and north-east, , on the Republic of Buryatia and Chita Region in the south and south-east, on the Mamsko-Chuysky District of Irkutsk Region in the west.
Total area is 91975 km2. Population of the Bodaybinsky District is 24 500 inhabitants as of 01.01.2009. Administrative centre of the Bodaybinsky District is the city of Bodaybo which population is 15 000 inhabitants.
Geographic coordinates of Bodaybo are following: latitude 57° 51' 02" N; longitude 114° 11' 36" E. The city is located on the right shore of the navigable Vitim River, 295 km from its river offing. The lowest point in middle flow of the Vitim River is 240 meters above sea level; the highest point of the city is 400 meters above sea level.
The climate is strongly continental; winter temperature ranges down to -55C, summer temperature ranges up to 45C. Average annual temperature is -6.5C. The Bodaybinsky District is located in the area equated to the Far North.
Bodaybo is connected with Irkutsk, the regional centre, by airline which length is 950 km and with the East-Siberian railway by Toximo railway station. There are 12 settlements on the territory of the Bodaybinsky District, besides Bodaybo.
Population of the Bodaybinsky District is 27 300 inhabitants including 17 900 inhabitants of working population. 16 500 inhabitants are involved in economy, 10 900 inhabitants are involved in industry.

Transport and Communications of Bodaybinsky District of Irkutsk Region
At the present time, the main form of transportation in the Bodaybinsky District remains an automobile. Common carriers of passengers by fixed city and suburban routes are Limited liability company “Automobile operating company” and private companies and people. All-cargo, sewage and public road maintenance services are performed by Limited liability company “SpetsAoutoTrans”. Industry enterprises effect cargo carriage by theirselves.
You can get from Bodaybo to the regional centre by air, to other regions of Russia by automobile road Bodaybo-Taximo (the length is 220 km) or by trains from Moscow, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Kislovodsk, Tynda, Adler trains to Taximo railway station of the Severobaikalsky branch of the East-Siberian railway of the Baikal-Amur Mainline Railway section. There are 579.9 km of federal roads and 184.3 km municipal roads on the territory of the Bodaybinsky District.
Equipment of cellular communication operators “BaikalWestCom”, “MTS” and “Beeline” was set up in October, 2005.
Cellular communication operator BaikalWestCom” started to work at Balakhninsky and Mamakam Settlements in autumn of 2006, at Kropotkin settlement in September of 2007 and Artemovsky settlement in 2009.
