Lake Baikal - is a lake in Eastern Siberia, the maximum depth is more than 1600 metres, the length of Lake Baikal is 636 km, the width is from 25 to 80 km. There is the Olkhon island near the northwest shore of lake Baikal. Olkhon is the heart of ancient stories and historical legendaries.
Kazachinsko-Lensky District of Irkutsk Region is rather small for remote areas of Irkutsk Region (4.3 % of Irkutsk region, 33 300 km2), population is 20 900 inhabitants, as of 1.01.2006 (0.9 % of population of Irkutsk Region).
The administrative center of Kazachinsko-Lensky District of Irkutsk region is Kazachinskoe settlement, population is 7 800 inhabitants. Besides, Kazachinsko-Lensky District consists of 6 municipal rural administrations: Kazachinskoe, Magistralninskoe, Ulkanskoe, Novoselovskoe, Martynovskoe, Karamskoe including 28 settlements. 64.9% of population is concentrated in urban-type settlements (Magistralny, Ulkan, Kunerma), 35.1% - in rural areas.
The Baikal-Amur Mainline Railway and the automobile road автодорога “Ust-Kut – Magistralny – Kunerma– Uoyan” pass from the west to the east through the territory of Kazachinsko-Lensky District. The same as Zhigalovsky District of Irkutsk Region, Kazachinsko-Lensky District lies outside intensive development and colonization areas and far from main centers: distance from Magistralny to the nearest town Ust—Kut is 170 km by rail.
Economic migration structure with agricultural and commercial functions which is traditional for taiga regions was formed in meridian (north-south) direction along the main water artery of Kazachinsko-Lensky District – Kirenga river. Railway and automobile road at the river intersection of which the biggest settlements Magistralny and Ulkan are situated play the dominant role in commercial and social life of Kazachinsko-Lensky District
Thereby, with respect to year-round transport connection geographical and economic setting of Kazachinsko-Lensky District of Irkutsk can be regarded as relatively favourable.
