Lake Baikal - is a lake in Eastern Siberia, the maximum depth is more than 1600 metres, the length of Lake Baikal is 636 km, the width is from 25 to 80 km. There is the Olkhon island near the northwest shore of lake Baikal. Olkhon is the heart of ancient stories and historical legendaries.
Ziminsky District of Irkutsk Region is located in the southern part of Irkutsk Region. It has a total area of 7 000 square km. Official date of the foundation of Ziminsky District is 14th February of 1923 year.
General population of Ziminsky District is 15 000 inhabitants, as of 01.01.2004. Population density of Ziminsky District is 2.1 per sq.km (dencity of Irkutsk Region is 3.4 per sq.km. Rural population is concentrated in 54 settlements, population distribution is irregular, population varies from 2000 to 4000 inhabitants. Rural settlements of more than 1000 people are Kimiltai, C-Hazan, Batama. Rural settlements of less 100 people are 20.
Agricultural industry is most developed in economy of Ziminsky District, its percentage in sales revenue is 62%. There are 48 farm enterprise registered in Ziminsky District, 15 of these are production enterprises which produce and realize agricultural products. There are 33 reinforced-concrete bridges on the roads of the district.
Ziminsky District of Irkutsk Region is rich in mineral, water, hydropower, forest, land, hunting resources. There are deposits of sand-gravel and explored commercial reserves of limestone on the territory of Ziminsky District.
Recreation potential of Ziminsky District is average. Comparatively favourable climate, spurs of Eastern Sayan Mountains forming a variety of relief, flora and fauna, rivers attractive for aquatic tourism are main features of the district. In Ziminsky District there are significant deposits of therapeutic muds of Hothurskoe Bog, a lot of mineral springs for different purposes, pensionates and tourist centres.
Zulumaisky Beaver Sanctuary is situated on the territory of Ziminsky District. Total area of the sanctuary is 12 hectares. The experiment on maintenance and dispersal of rare species of European beaver has been carried out for almost 40 years. Ziminsky District of Irkutsk Region is perspective for amateur and sport hunting. Total hunting area is 396 500 hectares. Opportunities for commercial hunting are limited. The forest fund of Ziminsky District of Irkutsk Region consists of forest lands (72%), agricultural lands (17.8%), bogs (10%), water lands(1.6%).
Bioproductive lands occupy 3.8% of the land fund of the district including road lands(0.29%), reserve lands occupy 7,8 % of the land fund. Arable land of Ziminsky District of Irkutsk Region is 5.6 hectares per person.
