Lake Baikal - is a lake in Eastern Siberia, the maximum depth is more than 1600 metres, the length of Lake Baikal is 636 km, the width is from 25 to 80 km. There is the Olkhon island near the northwest shore of lake Baikal. Olkhon is the heart of ancient stories and historical legendaries.
Angarsky District of Irkutsk Region is located in the most economically developed south-western part of Irkutsk Region. The district comprises Angarsk, a city of oregion subordinance, Meget, an urban-type settlement, and also Odinsk and Savvateevka, rural settlements.
History of Angarsk began in 1945 year when project site of Coal-to-Liquids Plant which coal was mined in Cheremkhovsky District was established in the interfluve area of Angara and Kitoy rivers. Pioneer builders came in wild taiga, on the shore of Kitoy river, in autumn of the same year. And the worker's settlement had already been granted the status of the city named Angarsk.
Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR “On the Award of the Order of the Red Banner of Labour to Angarsk City of Irkutsk Region for Success in Five-Year Plan of Development of Industry” was issued in 1971, 18th January.
General population is 262 800 inhabitants, of which rural population is 3000 inhabitants. Angarsk is ranked third in population of Irkutsk Region after Irkutsk and Bratsk.
Angarsk Museum of Clocks and Watches highlights 1100 timepieces from all over the world.
There are 4 municipal facilities of social protection including the orphanage, rehabilitation center for disabled children. There are 18 medical facilities in Angarsk.
Total timber stock of Angarsk Municipal District is evaluated at 6 million cubic metres including softwood – 2.9 million cubic metres (48.3%). dominant timber is pine tree. However, exploitable volumes are rather small (total-0.8 million cubic metres including softwood -0.3 million cubic metres) because more 80% of forests are young plantings.
Hunting areas occupy 70 hectares in Angarsk District of Irkutsk Region. Hunting industry has no future in Angarsk District because of small area and paucity of commercial species.
Comparatively favourable climate, Angara and Kitoy rivers attractive for aquatic tourism, hydromineral resources used for therapeutic purposes increase recreational appeal of the district.
Angarsk mineral waters are good for treatment of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, nervous system and digestive diseases. There are a lot of pensionates and tourist centres.
“Angarskaya” mineral water is recommended as a medical-table water good for gastrointestinal tract and metabolism. Deposit of mineral water was also developed near Savvateevka Settlement.
