There is the Olkhon island near the northwest shore of lake Baikal. Olkhon is the heart of ancient stories and historical legendaries.

Irkutsky District of Irkutsk Region Irkutsky District of Irkutsk Region is located in the southern part of Irkutsk Region.

Its development owes to the geographll location. On the one hand, it is a suburban area of the region's capital, which offers benefits versus other rural areas, on the other hand - this is the area of Lake Baikal's shoreline.

Irkutsky District extends about 130 km from west to east and about 130 km from north to south. It has a total area of 1 132 400 ha. The territory of the district adjoins the basin of Baikal on the west. The main water artery is Angara river.

The transportation network of the district includes the Transsiberian Railway, a grid ol motor roads of various categories and wain routes along the Angara River and on Lake Baikal.

The climate of the district is strongly conli nental, with a long cold winter and relatively hot summer. The area gets little precipitation (430-600 mm), most of which comes in the form of rain; the rainiest month of the year is July.

The district was firstly mentioned in the administrative documents on Irkutsk Province early in the 18th century when according to an Edict of Peter I the Great Siberian province was divided into 5 provinces, one of which became Irkutsk Province.

Nowadays Population of Irkutsky District is 68615 inhabitants - people of 60 nationalities. There are 84 settlements in Irkutsky District of Irkutsk region. The district is administratively divided into 21 municipalities.

Irkutsky district has numerous departmen tal recreation resorts, health resorts, tourism bases, children's medical, sports and recuperation institutions, yacht-clubs, bicycle and ski ing rental bases. Museum complex of "Taltsy" enjoys great popularity.

One of the best-developed tourism center of the district is Listvyanka settlement, which is a part of Listvyanka municipality assigned with the status of urban settlement as pari of Irkutsk district municipality. Nowadays, Listvyanka has become a tourism center. The settlement has many hotels of different classes and capacity, a stable, a downhill skiing resort. catering facilities and other elements of tourism infrastructure.

Developing Innovative Ways of Irkutsky District:
Developing of tourism and recreation special zone conforming to the highest world standards (tourist centres and guest houses, pensionates and health resorts).
Increasing of housing construction up to 100 000 square meters per year
Establishment of deep timber conversion enterprises
Establishment of building enterprises

The main program of agricultural sector is development of fodder cropping, meat, milk, vegetables production and processing.

Each year thousands of residents of Irkulsk region and visitors of our region conic to Listvyaka to see Lake Baikal.
